Description
The G 29 Building at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, also known as the Black Sheds, is an aircraft hangar built in 1912 by the War Office's Directorate of Fortifications and Works. It features a timber frame clad in corrugated iron and has a rectangular plan, consisting of two side-opening sheds with central entries. The elevation facing the flying field includes two gabled entrance bays, with one remaining at the rear.
Inside, the building has timber lattice trusses supported by iron tension rods at the tie beams, reflecting the style of mid-19th century trussed beams. This hangar is the only surviving example of the extensive groups of hangars constructed at Farnborough before the First World War. Other hangars from this period can be found at Larkhill in Wiltshire, Eastchurch in Kent, and a notable group at Montrose in Scotland. The design of these early aircraft sheds typically featured side-opening doors and lacked the lean-to annexes that later became standard for accommodating workshops and spare parts.
