Garden Wall At Nos 33 And 35

This is a late 18th or early 19th century red and grey brick garden wall, forming the front boundary to the gardens of numbers 33 and 35 Keyhaven Road. The wall is approximately 69 metres long and about 2 metres high, topped with a soldier course and punctuated by piers. The more decorative sections of the wall are built in Flemish bond, using grey bricks as headers, while other sections use Stretcher bond. The construction suggests a date in the 18th century. Evidence of repair to the brickwork is visible around the entrance to number 33, and re-pointing is seen adjacent to the new piers at the entrance to number 35.

Carrington Grange, an 18th century building, originally had extensive grounds, including outbuildings, a formal garden to the rear, and landscaped grounds and a drive to the front. The wall originally fronted the southern boundary of these grounds, bordering the main road. Later development has obscured the original gardens, outbuildings, and drive. Numbers 33 and 35 Keyhaven Road were built as infill development within the garden walls. The wall in front of numbers 33 and 35, and the continuation to number 31, were listed in 1974. It appears the wall may have been part of the curtilage of the 1953 listing for Carrington Grange when numbers 33 and 35 were constructed.

The wall is designated at Grade II for its group value with the listed Carrington Grange and Carrington Farmhouse, contributing to the understanding of the Grange and its original setting. Despite some repairs, the wall remains substantially intact and retains both its decorative and functional appearance.
