Description

The Esso Recreation Club, formerly known as The Jolly Sailor Public House and previously listed as Ashlett Mill, is a tide mill that dates back to 1816, with historical records extending to 1618. The building is constructed of brick, with sections that are partly cement rendered and partly weatherboarded, and features some stone dressings. It has an old plain tile roof and is built on a causeway made of brick, rubble stone, and earth.

This structure is 3 and a half storeys tall with an attic and consists of six bays, along with a single-storey two-bay addition at one end and a two-storey two-bay addition at the other. The front, which faces the harbour, has a rubble stone facing on the left side of the mill and a brick facing below the mill, with sloping brick buttresses between the bays. There are two arched mill race openings beneath the central bays and a stone band at ground floor level.

On the ground floor, the left-hand four bays feature 16-pane segmental head windows. The first floor has a raised string and 12 or 16-pane segmental head openings in the central four bays. The second floor has a raised band with 12 or 16-pane segmental head windows in the central two and end bays. A stone tablet with the date is located in the centre. The building has a mansard roof, with segmental-headed 12-pane dormers on the lower face, including a pair in the centre and one in each adjacent bay. On the left side, there is a half-hipped single-storey building with four 20-pane windows, while on the right side, there is a set-back half-hipped building with a verandah underneath and two 20-pane windows on the weatherboarded first floor.
