Description

This is a group of four 18th-century houses located on the north side of High Street. Number 83 is a painted brick building with a hipped, tiled roof and slate side hanging. It appears to have three stories, but the first floor is blank. It features two unbarred sash windows with moulded, flush frames. Numbers 84 and 85 have early 20th-century shop fronts. Number 84 is stuccoed, while number 85 is of painted brick and has an eaves cornice and tiled roof. Each has two stories and a hipped dormer window; the dormers feature glazing bars. The first floor windows are unbarred but have cambered head linings. Number 85 also has modern shop fronts to the ground floor. Number 86 is an early 18th-century house, connected to number 85, although its roof is slightly lower. It has a painted brick facade, an eaves cornice, and a modern tiled roof. It contains two windows on each floor with early 19th-century casements and sashes with flush frames and glazing bars, and an advanced modern shop front. These houses, numbers 83 to 88, together with Blake’s Cottage and numbers 85b and the flanking buildings to the east and west, form a group of buildings of local interest.
