Description

Nos 35 to 53 on Norfolk Crescent is a terrace built around 1825 as part of a plan to develop a resort following the construction of a bridge to Hayling Island in 1824. The building is made of brick and stucco, topped with a slate roof. The crescent is an unfinished design that features a symmetrical layout, with an eastern terminal block, a curving range of seven units leading to a central projection, and a single unit to the west. It stands three storeys tall, with an attic and basement, and has a total of 33 windows.

The walls are made of yellow brick in Flemish bond, extending through the attic level at the ends and the centrepiece, which has arched openings. The first and second floor openings have rubbed flat arches, while the ground floor is rusticated with recessed arched openings that have keys, cambered at the ends and centrepiece, and stone cills on a plinth. The end and centrepiece feature stucco pilasters on the first and second floors, with the end pilasters topped with Corinthian capitals and panelled pilasters above the cornice that have rounded brick caps.

Most windows are sashes set in reveals, and the first-floor French windows open onto a continuous balcony with decorative wrought-iron railings, although many windows are of a later date. Most doorways have radiating fanlights and panelled doors, while the centrepiece has a solid porch across the area, with double doors beneath a cambered arch and fanlight. The approach to each door is raised and paved, leading across the forecourt, with cast-iron flanking rails along the front of each basement area, and a gate providing access to the area steps. The rear of the crescent features an unbroken curve with flat-roofed two-storey outshots, some of which have been altered recently.
