Description
The Church of St Mary is a parish church located on Church Road in Hayling Island. It dates back to the 13th century, with restorations carried out in 1869 by Street, focusing on the nave, and in 1892 by Blomfield. The church features a nave and aisles with four bays, a tower positioned above the east bay, a chancel, a north vestry, and a south porch.
Inside, the arcade has been restored and includes cusped circular small clerestory lights above the columns. The tower supports consist of half octagonal columns set against a square core, while the remainder of the interior retains its 13th-century character. Notable interior features include five tall lancet windows at the east end of the chancel, a double-arched piscina, and the partial remains of an old Purbeck font.
Externally, the church maintains its 13th-century appearance with steep tile roofing, stepped buttresses, lancets, a 19th-century Perpendicular west window, and a plain 13th-century west door. There are also north and south doors, with the south door featuring a large timber porch that is partly medieval. The central tower has two stages with lancets and is topped by a shingled broach spire. The walls are constructed of stone rubble with stone dressings.
