Description

Hill View, including the adjoining arch to the south, is a house and arch dating from around the 1730s, with some 20th-century alterations. It is constructed of Flemish bond red brick and features brick platbands. The roof is made of clay plain tiles with gabled ends, and there are brick stacks at the gable ends.

The building has a two-room plan with a central entrance lobby in front of a staircase located at the back. Both rooms are heated by fireplaces located at the gable ends. The house is built into the cliff of a large chalk pit. To the left of the house, there is a large arch that is integral to the structure and also built into the chalk cliff.

The exterior consists of three storeys and a cellar. The east front is symmetrical with three bays and has platbands at the first and second floor levels. The ground and first floor openings feature cambered brick arches, while all windows are 20th-century casements, with the right window on the second floor blocked. The central doorway also has a cambered arch and a 20th-century door. The large segmental brick arch to the left is built into the chalk cliff and has a later lean-to outshut in front. At the rear, where the ground level is higher, the house appears as a single storey and features a 20th-century porch and casements on either side.

Inside, the floors are supported by stop-chamfered beams with run-out or cyma stops. Most of the chimneypieces and joinery have been replaced. However, the original roof structure remains intact, featuring staggered tenoned purlins and high collars that are morticed and tenoned to the principals and common-rafter couples, without a ridgepiece. Graffiti can be found on the chalk walls of the cellar.

Hill View is located next to the entrance of a very large chalk pit.
