Description

The barn at Hatchwood Farm, located to the southeast of the farmhouse, dates from the late 17th century with an early 18th-century addition, or it may be an early 18th-century structure with a mid-18th-century addition, dated either 1710 or 1740. It features red brick in Flemish bond with an internal timber frame and a plain tile roof. The barn consists of three bays, with the right bay being an addition, and includes a rear aisle. There are opposing cart entries in the original central bay, with the front entry having a hipped roof with a gablet. The front wall displays a decorative pattern of vents, including hexagonal vents positioned above and below slit vents, as well as cross vents and a gable bird-hole at the rear and returns. The right return wall features large numerals in grey headers indicating the date. A later outshut has been added to the front right, and the aisle to the rear right bays has been removed, replaced by a 20th-century breeze-block wall. Inside, the barn has jowelled wall-posts braced to tie-beams and wall plates, collared queen-strut roof trusses with principal rafters that reduce in size above the collar, clasped purlins, halved, pegged rafters with carpenters' numerals, and arched wind braces. The timbers used in the construction are reused from an earlier timber-framed barn with wattle and daub infill, likely from the 16th century.
