Description
The Close is a building dating from the 17th century, early 18th century, and later. It features a symmetrical north front with two storeys and an attic, comprising two bays and one window on the ground floor and two on the first floor. The roof is red tiled and hipped at the ends, adorned with a fully moulded modillion cornice that breaks into a pediment above the slightly projecting centre. There are flat-roofed dormers on each side. The walls are stucco with plain openings, including a tall round-arched window above a smaller round-headed window at the centre, both with stone cills and a plinth. The windows are sashes in exposed frames.
To the east, a lower plain wing extends with a slate roof and a painted brick blank wall. The east elevation shows an L-shaped plan, originally symmetrical with five windows but now a narrow arrangement of three windows and two dormers. The walling consists of colourwashed brickwork in red and blue Flemish bond. The south bay features a red brick porch with rusticated jambs, a keystone, and a flat arch within a gable. Further south, set back, is an older two-storey block of lower height, which has upper sash windows and three lower mullion and transom leaded lights. The west elevation of the main block has three windows and one dormer with coupled sashes. The house is completed as a rectangular block with more recent lower additions, resulting in an elaborate roof plan.
