Description
The Church of St Mary is a Grade II* listed building located in Hartley Wintney, dating from the 13th century with 19th-century additions. It features a medieval nave and chancel, complemented by mid-19th-century transepts and a western tower. The church has a red tile roof, and its walls are constructed from small stones and flint, accented with stone dressings.
Notable architectural elements include three single-light windows with cusped tops, a 14th-century traceried two-light window with a pointed arch, and a 15th-century two-light window set within a square frame. Additional windows, designed in a similar style from the 19th century, include a three-light window with simple cusping located within a splayed four-centre arch, with one being the east window and others situated on the south side of the nave and in the transepts, where they feature hood moulds.
The western tower consists of three stages, distinguished by weathered boards, and is adorned with four pinnacles at each corner that rise above an embattled parapet. The tower has diagonal corner buttresses that are offset at each stage, a high plinth, and flint walling with ashlar stone dressings. The tower's windows vary in number, with three lights at the top stage, two in the middle, and one at the bottom. Inside, the church contains good fittings, including box pews and an early 18th-century communion rail.
