Description

Crondall War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with later additions for subsequent conflicts. It is situated at the center of the main pathway through Crondall Burial Ground, next to the churchyard of the Church of All Saints, which is a Grade I listed building.

The memorial features a limestone Latin cross that is octagonal in shape with a tapering shaft. The shaft ends in a cushioned foot on a splayed base and rises from a cruciform-shaped plinth with a chamfered foot. Each arm of the plinth has an ogee top, and the four projecting faces of the cruciform display shallow, reverse ogee arches. These faces include inset panels that feature the main inscription and the names of those who died in the First World War, with additional inscriptions carved into the arch above each panel.

The main dedication, incised into the memorial, reads: "IN/ GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF THE/ CRONDALL MEN/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN/ THE GREAT WARS/ 1914 - 1919/ &/ 1939 - 1945." Above this, the inscription states: "IN SACRED SLEEP THEY LIE SAY NOT THE BRAVE DIE."

On the second face of the plinth, the arch is inscribed with: "LIVE THOU FOR ENGLAND WE FOR ENGLAND DIED," along with 16 names below. The third face bears the inscription: "THEY WERE A WALL UNTO US BOTH BY NIGHT AND BY DAY," with another 16 names below. The fourth face reads: "REMEMBER THEN WHO CAME NOT HOME FROM THE WARS," accompanied by 15 names below.

Additionally, three of the return faces of the plinth arms are also inscribed. Two faces list the dates "1939 – 1945" followed by four names each, while the third face is dedicated to an individual who fell in a later conflict, stating: "BRUNEI - 1962/ (NAME)."

The memorial is set upon a single-step base made of stone paving.
