Description
The Ancillary Centre at St Vincent School, originally built as a barracks gymnasium and fives court in 1847 by Captain H James of the Royal Engineers, now serves as a college function room. Constructed from brick featuring black headers and rubbed brick headers, it has a slate hipped roof and a single-depth plan. The building is two storeys tall and has a three-window range. Its symmetrical front is topped with a parapet and includes a round-arched doorway with mid-20th century double doors, flat-arched 3/3-pane sash windows on either side, and three round-arched 6/6-pane sash windows on the first floor. Inside, the former fives court boasts a metal trussed roof supported by decorative curved brackets. This structure was part of HMS Vincent, a significant Royal Marines barracks, where the fives court was a traditional feature.
