Description
The Fareham and County Club, located at No. 68 High Street, is a notable 18th-century building, with a date inscribed on one of the bricks indicating 1764. It is constructed of red brick and features a stucco stringcourse, a brick modillion cornice, and a coped parapet. The building has a mansard slate roof and stands two storeys tall with an attic, which includes five dormers. On either side of the central porch, there are two bow windows, each containing three windows that extend to the eaves. The sash windows are fitted with glazing bars.
The porch is supported by Doric columns and features a pediment, a semi-circular fanlight, and a door with six moulded and fielded panels. This porch is accessed by four steps with an iron handrail, although the house has lost the railings that once enclosed its forecourt. The Fareham and County Club is part of a group of listed buildings along High Street and Union Street, which includes listed street lamps, Nos 1 and 2, the Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul on Church Place, the Red Lion Hotel, and No. 10 East Street. Additionally, No. 45 High Street is recognized for its local interest.
