Description

Blackbrook House Maternity Home, formerly known as Blackbrook Place, is an early 19th-century building located on the north side of The Avenue in Fareham. The structure is made of white brick and features a stone plinth, stone bands at the first and second floors, and a stone blocking course. It stands three storeys tall with cellars and has five windows, including three in a central brick bow that extends the full height of the building. The first floor of the bow is recessed and supported by stone Ionic pillars between the windows, with an iron balcony in front of the two outer windows. The first and second floors have three-light sash windows flanking the central windows, all with glazing bars, except for the ground floor bow which lacks glazing bars, and the eastern ground floor window which has modern glazing. There is also a one-storey modern wooden addition in front. On the west side, there is a two-storey recessed extension from the late 19th century with a slate roof. The north entrance facade features a square brick porch with pilasters and a slightly advanced bay on the first floor above. Inside, the building has brick vaulted former wine cellars and a notable staircase with turned, twisted balusters.
