Description

The Beeches is an early 19th-century house, later converted into flats, located in Lowestoft. Constructed with gault brick, the front façade is rendered on its returns and the rear is of brick. The building has a double-depth plan, with a slate roof over the front range and pantiles to the rear. The south-facing facade features three bays with two storeys. A full-height bow dominates the central bay, opened on the ground floor to create a porch framed by a pair of fluted Greek Doric columns. A 20th-century half-glazed door is situated within the porch, with a rectangular overlight above. A 6/6 curved sash window is positioned above the door, set within a gauged skewback arch. Similar 6/6 sash windows, though flat, are present on each floor, one on either side of the bow. Overhanging eaves are present. The gabled roof is punctuated by a pair of gault-brick stacks set in the valley between the two sections. The left-hand (west) stack was reduced in height following storm damage in 1987. 20th-century single-storey extensions are attached to the east and west returns. The rear elevation is irregular and includes a 20th-century glazed door centrally located, an early 19th-century 6/6 sash window on the ground floor to the left, another first-floor window to the right, and the remainder are 20th-century sashes or casements. A dentil eaves cornice runs along the rear. The interior features an open string stick-baluster staircase with a ramped and wreathed handrail. The rear section of the building incorporates chamfered bridging beams.
