Description

Passfield House is a house with a complex history, dating from the 15th century and incorporating elements from the 16th, 17th, mid-19th, and early 20th centuries. The structure combines various walling materials: roughcast to the east front, exposed timber framing with close-studding and ironstone infill, brick infill, sandstone rubble with brick dressings, and part tile-hung first floor with scalloped bands. The roof is tiled and gabled, hipped, and half-hipped.

The core of the house is a late-medieval timber-framed hall with a two-storeyed cross-wing at the south end. A large chimney was inserted into the hall, and the hall itself was refaced around 1800. A lower and shorter two-storeyed block was attached in the mid-19th century, running parallel to the original structure. A single-storeyed, L-shaped north wing, built around 1900, incorporates a wide entrance leading to a small cobbled forecourt.

The east elevation has two storeys and four windows, featuring triple sash windows and a late-19th century half-glazed door in a plain frame. Other elevations are irregular, also of two storeys, with an attic to the south cross-wing and small casements. A porch, dating from around 1900, features a tiled canopy supported by rustic poles.

Internally, the large timber framework is exposed, with arch braces to the walls, purlins, and tie beams. A bressummer is visible on the chimney-breast, and the framework of a staircase from around 1600 is now enclosed within the mid-19th century block. The Tudor-period south stacks are constructed of brickwork with stepped outer walling and offsets. The c.1900 store and portico block has a tiled roof and stone walls.
