Description
Nicholas Farmhouse is a house that dates from the 16th century, 17th century, and was specifically altered in 1757. It is constructed of brick and features both tiled and thatched roofing. The building has an L-shaped layout that reflects its three periods of construction. The earliest section, located at the angle, is the eastern unit of a timber-framed house, while the western unit was refaced in the 17th century. A long block was added to the north-south orientation in the 18th century.
The front of the house, facing east, is two storeys high and has five windows. The thatched roof is hipped at the north end and half-hipped at the south. The walls are built in Flemish bond, with cambered openings on the ground floor. The north side, which is the east end of the original house, features exposed framing in the lower section, showcasing herringbone brickwork and tile-hanging on the first floor. The windows are 20th-century casements. The plain doorway includes a six flush-panelled door beneath a thatched canopy supported by posts, with a brick incised "SC 1757" on the south side jamb.
The north elevation has a tile roof that is steeply half-hipped at the west end, along with a shafted stack. The east side walls are tile-hung above exposed brick-nogged framing, while the west side is made of 17th-century English bond brickwork with a plinth. The rear elevations, located within the angle, display the long 18th-century arm with four windows above five, and the projecting 17th-century rebuilt wing. The later arm features casements, while the wing has large sashes from the early 19th century that have been restored.
