Description
The Hankin family tomb, located in the churchyard of St Mary's Church in Bentworth, is a chest tomb dating from 1816. Made of Portland stone, the tomb is designed in the Classical style and features a rectangular shape on a moulded base. It has a two-part cover that includes a low hipped top slab and a lower moulded cornice. The corners are adorned with broad reeded pilasters that taper towards the base, while the sides display octagonal fielded panels containing inscriptions. These panels are framed by fluted fan-shaped decorations radiating from the corners. The inscriptions are well-crafted in various scripts. The south panel commemorates John Hankin, who passed away on January 12th, 1816, at the age of 55. The north side honors Elizabeth, the widow of John Hankin, who died on September 13th, 1831, at the age of 67.
This tomb marks the final resting place of John Hankin and his wife Elizabeth. It is recognized for its early 19th-century design, quality craftsmanship, and historical significance, contributing to the overall character of the churchyard.
