Description

Hook Cottage is a house with an elegant Regency facade, built in 1720 and later altered and refronted in Gothick style in the early 19th century. It features vernacular extensions from 1934, constructed with matching materials. The exterior consists of flint walls with galletting and red brick dressings, along with Gothick elements made of yellow brickwork. The later walls are flint with a brick plinth, quoins, and first-floor flush bands. The roof is hipped and covered with slate.

The symmetrical south front has two storeys, with indications of an original five-window layout. It currently has three windows on the first floor, with a slight setback on the west side where there is an additional window from the 1934 extension. The windows are Gothic casements, paired on the ground floor and set at a low cill level. The entrance features an arched half-glazed door.

A notable aspect of the building is the Gothick improvement, which includes projections on each side with Tudor-arched openings, connected by a splayed open porch that has two narrow arched openings and two wider middle arched openings, separated by narrow corner buttresses. Above this is a narrower central section with a gable and a hoodmould. The brickwork includes a plinth, chamfered quoins, an angular band, and coping on the first-floor parapet, which has a dipped centre on each side and a raised centre in the middle. The buttresses extend above the parapet level, and the gable features flanking pilasters on tapered stepped bases, culminating in a tall octagonal finial that was originally a chimney flue but is now sealed and topped with a fox weather vane. The other elevations have a more vernacular appearance, with sash and casement windows. Inside, there is a plain Regency staircase.
