Description

The Barracks comprises five cottages forming a U-shaped block of late 18th-century origin, with 19th-century alterations and 20th-century improvements. Originally almshouses, the building later served as accommodation for French prisoners during the Napoleonic period, resulting in its name. The structure is built of brick in Flemish, Monk, and Flemish Garden Wall bonds, and has a tiled roof. It is two storeys high, with fairly regular window placement, some of which have been filled or replaced. The roof is gabled at the outer ends and hipped at the corners, features including brick dentil eaves. Cambered ground floor openings are present on the inner sides of the building, along with a plinth. The windows are casements. The doorways are 20th-century additions, including two glazed porches and one gabled porch.
