Description
A row of three estate cottages built in the mid-19th century for Sir William Erle. The front is of coursed stone with ashlar dressings, while the sides and rear are brick with vitrified headers. The roof is clay tile, with gabled ends, tile-hung gables, and dormers at the front, all featuring bands of shaped tiles, and wavy, pierced barge boards. Large brick axial stacks are present, with corbelled brick cornices and square yellow clay pots.
The cottages are arranged as a symmetrical range of three, with projecting gabled wings to the left and right. The wings have porch canopies supported by shaped brackets, and plank doors. The central three-bay range has a plank door with a gabled wooden lattice porch. Chamfered stone window frames are topped with hood moulds, and most windows have iron diamond lattice casements. The upper windows are located in the gables and in two gabled dormers at the centre, all with tile-hung gables and wavy pierced barge boards.
The interior has not been inspected. The row represents a good example of Victorian estate workers' cottages.
