Description
East Oakley House Barn, located southeast of East Oakley House, is an 18th-century timber-framed barn that has undergone some modifications over the years. The barn features three bays and aisles with central opposing entrances. It stands on a brick plinth and is weatherboarded on all sides, except for the west elevation, which is brick up to eaves height with weatherboarding above. The barn has irregular fenestration, including two two-pane casement windows on the northern elevation, one on either side of the barn doors; a large multi-pane casement and barn doors on the southern elevation; and a garage door on the eastern elevation. There is also a modern chimney in the south-western corner, which is not of historical significance.
Originally thatched, the barn's roof was covered with concrete tiles in 1983, which are also not historically significant. The roof is half-hipped and hipped above the north entrance. Internally, the purlins, raking struts, and trusses are concealed by an inserted ceiling in the western bay. The flooring consists of 20th-century limestone tiles in the central and western bays and concrete in the eastern bay.
The barn is part of a group that includes the 18th-century East Oakley House, cartshed, and northern barn, all of which are listed at Grade II. The barn has been depicted on all versions of the Ordnance Survey maps since the first edition in 1872, and its construction suggests it dates back to the 18th century.
