Description
The barn at Digweeds Farm dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with aisles added in the 19th century when it may have been reconstructed. It is a timber-framed structure with horizontal weatherboarding and a corrugated iron roof, while the north aisle features plain tiles. The barn has five bays and includes a wet-back central midstrey on the south side, with half-hipped ends. The south front has a tall pair of plank doors leading to the set-back midstrey, along with small doors at the west and north ends.
Inside, the barn has widely spaced thin posts on a plate supporting spur brick walls, which are connected to the main tie and aisle plate. There are heavy queenpost braces supporting a single main purlin, with no ridge piece and mostly original rafters. To the left of the main doors, there is a partition wall made of English bond brickwork up to plate level, with framing and boarding above. The barn suffered substantial damage during the hurricane in October 1987 but has been carefully repaired, and the interior framework remains complete.
