Description
The Burghclere War Memorial is a Grade II listed structure dedicated to those who fell in the First and Second World Wars. Made from Forest of Dean stone by an unknown architect, it features a three-stepped octagonal base topped with a pedestal and a Latin cross that has a tapered octagonal shaft. On the south side of the cross, there is a bronze sword of sacrifice, with a small carved St George and the Dragon serving as the pommel. The pedestal bears the inscriptions '1914-1919' on the south face and '1939-1945' on the north face. While the names of the fallen are not inscribed on the memorial itself, they are commemorated on stone plaques inside the nearby Church of the Ascension, which is also Grade II listed.
The memorial was erected after the First World War to honor the men of Burghclere who served and died during that conflict. It is located in the village center, at the junction of Harts Lane and Church Lane. The inscription for the Second World War was added later, making the monument a tribute to both wars.
The Burghclere War Memorial is designated as Grade II for its historical significance as a testament to the sacrifices made by the community during the two World Wars, its architectural simplicity as a tribute to the fallen, and its visual relationship with the adjacent Parish Room and House from 1890, as well as the Church of the Ascension from 1838, both of which are also Grade II listed.
