Description

The White Hart Public House is a building dating from the 17th, 18th, and early 19th centuries, located at the corner of London Road and Kingsclere Road. It is an old coaching inn with some exposed timber-framing at the rear, while the facades are primarily from the 18th century and are now rendered. The south elevation features two storeys with six windows, a hipped tile roof, rendered walls, and a plinth. The windows are sash types in exposed frames. A 20th-century doorway has a tall cambered head, which was the archway to the former coach entrance; it has a glazed upper part and a panelled lower door with windows on each side.

The west elevation includes an angular bay and a later arched entrance at its south side. Further north, the lower walling incorporates flint panels. The boundary wall on the east side of Kingsclere Road consists of close bands of red brickwork alternating with flint facings, interrupted by vertical brick elements and stone squares in the flint panels. This wall culminates in a lobby attached to the main building, featuring a slate roof, two high-level openings, and an arched doorway set in a square recess surrounded by flint panelling. To the east of the house, there is a single-storeyed block that retains parts of its original construction as a stable. Inside, there is a Tudor fireplace made of stonework, decorated with a rose design in the spandrels.
