Description

The gateway at Basing House dates from the mid-16th century and is characterized by its tall rectangular walling. The top is weathered and features stepped brickwork, topped with decorative triangular castellations, which are now incomplete. There is a single carriageway opening with a four-centred arch; the outer part is made of restored stonework and includes a hoodmould. The main structure is constructed of red brick in English bond, resting on a high stepped plinth. Above the arch, there is a much weathered stone panel, flanked by side pilasters that support a broken pediment. Within this pediment is a moulded panel with an arched head, which contains a shield with supporters.
