Description
The Town Hall, built in 1835, features a symmetrical facade in a classical style. It is two storeys high with five first-floor windows. The walls are finished in stucco, and the parapet has a moulded coping with a stepped panel above a fully moulded cornice and a plain frieze. The centre of the facade, above the cornice, is raised to accommodate a decorative cartouche set between pilasters. On either side, pilasters extend through the first-floor level, which is marked by a moulded cill band and plinth that rests on a cornice and frieze. The ground floor has a plain stage divided by half columns, with coupled arched windows above panels. The arched doorway is framed by a Tuscan porch supported by two columns and two pilasters, topped with a balustered parapet. The upper windows feature an architrave below a cornice and a pulvinated frieze, with Victorian sash windows on the first floor and casements on the ground floor. The classical design continues for two bays at each end, facing Church Street and Wote Street, and extends an additional two bays in red brickwork. There is a 19th-century drinking fountain at the rear, which was temporarily removed at the time of re-survey.
