Description
20 Swan Street is a Grade II* listed building dating from the late 14th century, with additions from the 16th and 18th centuries. It features a timber-framed, two-bay medieval hall, accompanied by a two-bay cross-wing on the north side, which contains a solar above a buttery, and a modern bay on the south side. The eastern front, which is from the 18th century, projects forward from the frame and has two storeys with four windows. The roof is hipped with lowered eaves at each end and has brick dentil eaves. The exterior is finished in painted brickwork laid in Flemish bond, with cambered openings on the ground floor and a cement plinth. The windows are casements, and there is a half-glazed door set in a solid frame, topped with a moulded canopy on brackets. The south side has modern sections replacing the ground-floor walling, flanking a garage entrance. Inside, the building retains an almost complete and massive frame, with a large beam above the hall's center featuring fragmentary remains of wide moulded arch braces and a carved head at the center. Above this is an arch-braced collar, and part of the arched frame of a doorway to the buttery is still visible. A massive chimney-breast was added when the first floor, made of wide boards, was constructed within the hall. At the rear, there is a cast iron Gothic casement window on the upper floor, along with a modern rear extension.
