Description
By Lanes is a building dating from the 17th century and early 18th century. It features a symmetrical front (west) that is of the later date, consisting of two storeys and an attic with five windows. The building has a tile roof and brick dentil eaves. The walls are made of red brick in Flemish bond, with a first-floor band, rubbed flat arches, and a plinth. The windows are modern casements with mullions and transoms. The solid doorcase includes a two-light fanlight, a flat hood supported by carved brackets, and a modern door.
The lower rear part of the building has a brick and tile exterior but retains a timber frame from the 17th century. Inside, there is an original staircase and a room featuring an original ceiling cornice, a corner cupboard, dado panelling, and a blue and white Dutch tile fireplace surround. Once a public house, the building still has a half-glazed porch dating from around 1900.
