Description
The walled garden to the north of Herstmonceux Castle is a Grade II listed structure, likely dating from the mid-16th century, with later alterations. The garden walls are primarily made of red brick in English bond, with some 20th-century patching and ashlar stonework. The rectangular garden is enclosed by walls that are approximately 3 metres high, increasing to 4 metres at the north end where the garden is elevated. Various sections of the wall display different construction phases; notably, the east wall features a central lower section of header-bond brickwork topped with English-bond brickwork. The coping is quadrant-sectioned, with a top course of headers and ball finials at the points where the wall ramps.
At the near south end of both the west and east walls, there are square-sectioned piers. The east wall slopes down and integrates with the castle, while the west wall steps down. Each of these walls has two round-arched doorways, with the southeastern doorway being elliptically-arched. The raised garden's south retaining wall is about 2 metres high and has saddle-back stone coping, along with a central flight of 20th-century stone steps that features stone piers and a console-bracketed balustrade. The north wall includes offset brick buttresses along its side and a central 20th-century bowed alcove with an ashlar colonnade at the front, featuring French windows in the bow.
A survey from 1570 mentions a walled arbour and orchard located to the north of the castle.
