HERSTMONCEUX STUNTS GREEN Aladdin's Cottage

GV II

Originally threshing barn, later tearooms and finally holiday accommodation. Early C17, modified in 1920s and c1983. Timber framed building now clad in C20 brickwork, apart from southwest side which has C17 brickwork in English garden wall bond. Steeply pitched thatched roof with early C20 inserted chimneystack to southwest. One storey, with attic inserted c1983. Front retains gabled midstrey with c1983 eyebrow dormer above and three C20 casement windows with leaded lights. Rear elevation has four C20 casements. Attached to southwest is a converted animal house not of special interest.

PLAN: Three bay barn aisled to north west.

INTERIOR: Timber frame with midrail and curved braces to wall frame. Aisle posts are intact, apart from one with lower part renewed in brickwork, and have curved tension braces. Roof has collar beam, purlins and original pegged rafters without ridgepiece. 1920s open fireplace inserted and room partitions and ceiling in matching style inserted c1983.
