Description

New Place is a house built in 1912 by the local architect John D Clarke, constructed in a Neo-Georgian style. The house is built of red brick in English bond, with a tiled roof, a tiled underside to the eaves, and three brick chimneystacks – one central and two to the sides. It is two storeys high with five windows. The end bays project under hipped roofs, and the central part features a recessed, channelled brick chimney and a dormer with an elliptical head. The first-floor windows are casements, while the ground-floor windows are elliptical-headed sashes with 20 panes. A central, pedimented wooden doorcase has a Gibbs surround and a two-panelled door. A stone date panel above the central first-floor window bears the inscription "M O 1912 ET FLAVERUNT VENTI IN DOMUS ILLAM ET NON CEDIT," accompanied by a New Testament quotation. The projecting bays have casement windows on the first floor. The right-side wing lacks a ground-floor window, while the left-side wing has a single casement, elliptical-headed on the ground floor. The return side of the left wing features an oculus to the first floor and an elliptical-headed casement to the ground floor.

Attached to the left is a wooden gate with piers featuring stone console brackets, leading to a former coach house of one storey and attics, constructed of English bond brickwork with a tiled roof. This coach house has a hipped dormer and original double doors. Inside the house, the staircase has a chinoiserie-style balustrade and a panelled screen in an early 18th century style, complete with a dado rail.
