Description
The Middle House Hotel is a notable timber-framed building located on Mayfield High Street, dated 1575. It features a half-H plan and is recognized as one of the best examples of timber-framed architecture in Sussex. The building has been restored and enlarged, with a ground floor that is close-studded on a base of stone and red brick. It includes casement windows arranged in two tiers of four lights each, with wooden mullions and transoms. Above these windows, there is ornamental circular timbering. Each end of the building has a gable that oversails on a moulded bressumer and brackets, adorned with carved bargeboards. A bay window below the west gable projects on brackets. The roof is tiled, and the structure consists of two storeys and an attic in the gables, featuring four windows. There are later additions at the rear. Inside, the hotel boasts fine fireplaces and overdoors.
