Description
The walls, piers, balustrades, steps, and sundial form a courtyard situated to the east of Rotherfield Hall. Constructed in 1897 by Francis Inigo Thomas for Sir Lindsay Lindsay Hogg, the walls are built of rubblestone brought to course, with ashlar detailing. The rectangular courtyard features a central sundial. The north and south walls incorporate entrances, while the east wall is characterised by balustrading and a central archway leading to a double flight of steps with balustraded retaining walls. The north and south courtyard walls are tall, with moulded flat coping, and ramp up to rusticated piers that are square in plan, featuring cornices and swept, corniced capstones. The east wall is lower, with balustraded sections flanking a projecting quoined centre. Steps ascend to a central archway with imposts and a moulded hood, flanked by corbelled stone benches beneath swan-neck pediments. The archway gives access to a double flight of steps, with a rear retaining wall incorporating a central niche with a fountain and basin. Situated centrally within the courtyard is a sundial, the dial set upon a stone ball with a base resembling the pier capstones and a plinth. These elements contribute to the garden setting of Rotherfield Hall, which itself is separately listed at Grade II*.
