Description

The north-west gateway to Rotherfield Hall and its attached flanking walls were built in 1897 by Francis Inigo Thomas for Sir Lindsay Lindsay-Hogg. The structure is made of rubblestone and ashlar, featuring iron gates. The central carriage entrance is flanked by giant rusticated piers that are square in plan, topped with cornices and pyramidal finials, although the finial on the southern pier is badly weathered. The double gates have cusped arcaded panels, petalled spike finials, and leaf and scroll decoration on the lower part, with bud and flower decoration above, while the central finials are particularly elaborate. The flanking walls are constructed of rubblestone brought to course, with rubblestone coping. The pedestrian entrances are round-arched and have decorative gates that match the main gates. The walls curve and continue at a lower level, extending approximately 14 metres on the south side and 43 metres on the north side, where there is a gateway with square piers topped with rusticated capstones, although part of this wall has collapsed. Inigo Thomas was also responsible for the enlargement of Rotherfield Hall and the design of its garden, which is listed as Grade II* in The Register of Historic Parks and Gardens of Special Interest.
