Description
The Gatehouse of the Old Palace, also known as The Convent of the Holy Child Jesus at St Leonard's Mayfield School, is a building dating from the 15th century. It features an archway from the palace of the Archbishops of Canterbury, which has been incorporated into a new structure designed by Edward Welby Pugin between 1863 and 1866. The building is constructed of ashlar stone and has a tiled roof. It includes casement windows with stone mullions. The central gateway is three storeys high and has three windows, along with a tall pointed carriage archway. There are gabled projections on either side; the west projection is L-shaped, two storeys tall, and has two windows, while the east projection is a single storey with two school buildings.
