Description

The building is a haybarn located to the west of Popeswood Farm, dating from the later 17th century, with an early 19th-century outshot to the north. The barn is timber-framed and clad in weatherboarding, sitting on a brick and stone plinth, topped with a hipped tiled roof. The structure features a four-bay design with a lean-to outshot on the north side.

On the exterior, the penultimate bay to the south has full-height double wooden cart doors that have been recently replaced. The north outshot includes a small 20th-century metal-framed casement window and two plank doors. The attached brick cowsheds to the west are not considered of special interest.

Inside, the wall frame has a midrail and retains most of the original curved tension braces, along with jowled upright posts. The cart entrance in the west wall of the penultimate bay was filled in later. The upright posts beside the cart entrance have replaced thinner tension braces to the tie beams. The roof is constructed with queenposts, purlins, and pegged rafters, lacking a ridgepiece. The north exterior wall, sheltered by the outshot, mostly retains its old weatherboarding, though some has been replaced with breezeblocks.

Historically, the barn is depicted on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map and has been used as a haybarn within living memory. It is a significant example of a four-bay timber-framed haybarn with a largely intact frame from the later 17th century, contributing to the farm group that includes Popeswood Farmhouse and a former stable with a hayloft above.
