Description
The former stable located to the northwest of Popeswood Farm is a stable with a hayloft above, dating from the mid-18th century. The roof has been re-tiled, and the door was replaced in the late 20th century. The ground floor is constructed of Sussex bond brickwork, featuring some grey vitrified headers, while the loft is timber-framed and clad in weatherboarding. The roof is half-hipped and tiled.
On the east side, there are two casement windows; the northern window has a cambered head lining, and the southern window is a fixed four-pane 19th-century casement. Between these windows is an off-center, renewed plank door. Inside, the east wall is made of sandstone rubble, and the ceiling features two axial beams along with exposed floor joists. The roof structure includes queenposts without collars, purlins, and rafters, but lacks a ridgepiece.
Historically, the stable is depicted on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map from 1875, and Popeswood Farm is also shown on the 1795 Map of Sussex by William Gardner and Thomas Green. This stable would have been used to house the farm cart horses, with the hayloft providing storage above. The building is a well-preserved example of a mid-18th century brick and timber-framed stable, reflecting the history of pre-mechanized farming, and is part of a farm group that includes the grade II listed Popeswood Farmhouse and a barn to the west of the farmhouse.
