Description

The Crown Inn dates from the first half of the 19th century. It is a two-storey building with three windows. The roof is slate, and a change in angle at the northwest part suggests the incorporation of an earlier building. The upper storey is clad in painted tile hanging, while the lower storey is painted brick. The upper floor has sash windows with margin lights. The ground floor has a carriage entrance leading to the rear, located on the northwest side. The contemporary door frame is substantial, featuring large, partly fluted pilasters, a large hood over an entablature with a massive cornice and architrave. This entablature is continued across the adjoining side window. The building forms a group with numbers 2 to 14 (even) and 2 to 6 (even) in Cinque Ports Street, at the entrance to Rye.
