Description
Sowdens Farmhouse is a former oasthouse located on Udimore Road, dating from the early to mid 19th century. The western part of the building consists of two circular hop kilns constructed in English bond with a conical tarred roof that lacks a cowl and fantail. It features some cambered openings and brick walls at the front and back, along with a 19th-century fixed casement window at the rear above ledged and braced double doors. The eastern wall has been restored in the 20th century, featuring a softwood frame weatherboarded on the outside, and this section of the storage has been reroofed in a traditional style with tiles. The oast houses retain cambered entrances at ground floor level and window openings at first floor level, although they have lost their drying floors. Attached to the west is a brick and tile-hung structure built around 1965, which is not included in the listing.
