Description

Downingbury Farm Oast is a former oasthouse, likely built in the mid-19th century, which is currently being converted into two houses as of February 1989. The structure features stowage that is primarily weatherboarded timber-framing set on brick footings, with some brick extending to the first floor. It has a peg-tile roof. The hop kilns are made of red brick and also have peg-tile roofs. The building has a T-plan layout, facing south-southwest. The main block includes a cart entrance at the right (east) end, while a narrower block projects forward from the center of the main block and is lower in height. To the left, the main roof extends over an outshot, and there are three circular hop kilns located at the back of the main block.

The exterior features an attractively irregular arrangement of windows, with a 1:1:1 pattern. The 19th-century windows have iron-framed casements with leaded glass, which are being replaced by timber casements without glazing bars. Both the main stowage and the front block have half-hipped roofs, while the hop kilns are notable for their conical roofs and eaves cornices made of cogged brick.

Inside, the oasthouse displays plain but sturdy carpentry details. This building is particularly attractive and is part of a group that includes the nearby Downingbury Farm Barn and the early 18th-century Downingbury Farmhouse.
