Description
The lychgate to the churchyard of the Old Church of St Peter is a Grade II listed structure built in memory of Sir Samuel Morton Peto, who died in 1889. It features a timber-framed design set on brick footings, topped with a stone slate roof, and is constructed in the Tudor Gothic style. The box-framed structure has full-width Tudor arches at both the front and back, each with moulded surrounds and urn stops. The headbeams are inscribed, with the front beam displaying a Biblical quotation and the back beam commemorating Sir Samuel Morton Peto. The side walls include 4-light windows that have hollow-chamfered mullions above plank-and-muntin panelling. The gables feature moulded bargeboards, and the gable-end trusses are supported by curving struts. Inside, the wall plates are moulded, and there are original double gates with wavy braces and a coffin rest, all supported by a series of turned balusters.
