Description
This is a late 17th-century farmhouse, although it may have earlier origins. The structure is timber-framed, set on brick footings, and clad with weatherboarding, with a brick stack and chimneyshaft, and a peg-tile roof. The farmhouse faces southwest and has a three-room-and-through-passage plan. Originally, there was an unheated service room at the right (southeast) end, separated from the hall by the passage and parlour at the left end. An axial stack between the hall and parlour served back-to-back fireplaces. Stairs rise from the parlour between the stack and the front wall. While the plan suggests possible medieval origins, the ground floor indicates a wholly 17th-century construction; the roof may potentially reveal evidence of earlier phases.
The farmhouse is two storeys high with attics in the roofspace and lean-to outshots at the back. The front has a regular, though not symmetrical, three-window facade incorporating 20th-century casements with glazing bars. A smaller fourth ground-floor window illuminates the stairs, which are located left of centre. The front doorway, positioned right of centre, has a 20th-century door. The roof is half-hipped at both ends.
The interior was not inspected during the survey, but plain 17th-century carpentry details were observed on the ground floor. The hall and parlour both feature plain chamfered axial beams, and the fireplaces are brick with plain oak lintels.
