Description
Starlock is a house designed in 1929 by Frank Scarlett of the firm Scarlett and Ashworth and built in 1930 for Colonel and Mrs Templar, showcasing the International Modern style. The structure features rendered brick with cavity walls and a metal balcony, topped with a flat roof.
The exterior consists of two storeys with three windows on the south-east or garden front. The windows are 3-light metal casements, with the ground floor windows being taller. All but the 5-light central ground floor window and French window have been replaced in a matching style in the late 20th century. The central bay is recessed and includes a metal balcony with an access door from the principal bedroom. There are end chimneystacks, and the south-west front has three metal framed casements, including a tall and narrow staircase window to the left. The main entrance, located to the right of this window, features a brick surround in stretcher bond, three steps, a flat hood, and the original door with a tall central glazed panel.
Inside, there is a winder staircase and a galleried hall that spans the full height of the central drawing room. Several original features have been preserved, including flush doors with cherrywood handles (two of which are folding), built-in wardrobes in bedroom 2, and built-in kitchen units. An original ceramic fireplace is present in the living/dining room, although it has been relocated from another position in the house. Some original light fittings also remain. Starlock is noted as only the third building in the UK constructed in the International Modern style.
