Description
21 Lion Street is a house and shop built in the late 19th century, featuring a Neo-Georgian style. The building is constructed of red brick and has a tiled roof. It stands two storeys high with three windows. The upper floor is adorned with a parapet that includes panels, a moulded brick eaves cornice, and four pilasters topped with moulded brick capitals. The windows are twelve-pane sashes with moulded architraves and moulded brick cills. A wrought iron shop sign bracket with scrollwork and a cast iron lamp bracket are also present.
The most notable feature is the shopfront, which includes a deep fascia, end pilasters, and round-headed arches with keystones. The pilasters are decorated with foliate capitals, and there are carved wooden panels featuring peardrop and scrollwork patterns. The centre of the shopfront has a semi-circular display window with four panels, complemented by a mirrored ceiling and a tessellated pavement that has a Greek key design, along with a marble front step.
Inside, the original wooden cornice and beaded tongued and grooved panelling can be found on the left side. The rear of the shop retains three windows with Art Nouveau glass, featuring frosted glass, leaded lights, and decorative patterns of diamonds, trefoils, and floral designs. The staircase is equipped with square newel posts and solid balustrading, although the lower part has stick balusters, and the upper section may have been boarded over.
