Description
The Peacock Lounge and Tea Rooms is a building that consists of two 16th century timber-framed houses now occupied as one. It has two storeys and an attic, featuring three windows in total. The northernmost house includes one dormer, and the first floor overhangs but has been later covered with tiles. The southernmost house retains its old framing with sloping struts inside and 16th century ceilings, but has modern windows, including one on the first floor that projects on brackets. The entrance features a doorcase with panelled pilasters and a carved entablature above, along with a central fanlight.
The northernmost house also has ceiling beams, but it features 18th century sash windows on the first floor and a later shop front below. Its doorcase has fluted pilasters, and the frieze displays carved motifs on both sides, with a moulded cornice and architrave, but lacks a fanlight. According to the Victoria County History, this house has cellars with rubble walls.
All the listed buildings on the west side of Lion Street form a group.
