Description

The Pilgrims Rest Restaurant is a 15th-century timber-framed building located outside the gates of Battle Abbey. It features a Wealden type design, consisting of a recessed center with wings that have their first floor overhanging at the ends of the floor joists. The front of the building is close studded, while the north wing is entirely plastered on the ground floor and has squares of plaster infilling above, with some timbering visible. The south wing includes curved braces on the first floor. The center of the building has coved eaves, with the upper ends of the studs curved to form this feature, and a curved brace on the south side of the recess. The first floor has casement windows and one oriel window with six lights and a transom. There is a pointed doorway with an original iron-studded door, and the hall features a well-crafted moulded crown post roof.
