Description
The Gatehouse at Battle Abbey was built in 1338 by Abbot Alan of Ketling. It is constructed of stone and features a pointed carriage archway along with a similar pedestrian archway, both with two storeys above. The first floor has ornamental arcading and is topped with a castellated parapet. There are four octagonal turrets at the corners. The western section, which serves as the porter's lodge, dates back to the 12th century and is also two storeys high. The eastern part of the gateway was added in the 16th century, likely by Sir Anthony Browne, on the site of the Abbey's Almonry and was used as the courtroom for the manor of Battle until the 18th century. This section has two storeys, four windows, and two round-headed arches. An arched buttress and an octagonal turret are located at the northeast corner. The Gatehouse is part of a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
