Description

This is an 1840s Poor Law Institution, originally Battle Hospital, built in a Tudor Gothic style. It is constructed of coursed stone with ashlar quoins. The building forms a rectangular courtyard with a projecting section to the north. The south side, facing the road, has a projecting central three-story section. The central bay of this projection features a four-centred carriage archway on the ground floor, with two stories above and a gable above it. The window bays on either side have three sash windows each, with a slightly lower gable above each. Smaller single-story buildings, with no windows facing the road, flank this central block. At the outer ends are similar angled blocks, each with a gable and a south-facing window in the east block. Low garden walls with openings connect to the south ends of the east and west sides of the courtyard, which are two stories high with one window and a gable each. All windows are square-headed casements with three obtusely-pointed lights. The roofs are slate, and the chimneys are diagonally placed brick. The north side of the courtyard contains 25 windows, two stories, and a central, higher three-story block with a splayed front and a gable over the centre of each section. The east and west sides of the courtyard each have six windows. The building is set within a perimeter wall.
