Description

Battle Lodge, dated 1835 above the doorway, is a Tudor Gothic building with a cross-shaped plan, constructed from sandstone ashlar. It has two storeys and features three windows on the south side and one on the east. Each wing has a gable, with the east and west wings including kneelers. The roof is tiled. The first-floor windows are two-light casements with stone mullions and dripstones above, while the ground-floor windows are bay windows with two tiers of four lights, also featuring stone mullions and transoms. The south wing has a porch with a four-centred archway and a dripstone above, leading to a room on the first floor. A cartouche displaying the Ashburnham Arms is located in the gable. On the north side, there are ground-floor rooms at the angle of the cross plan, each with hipped roofs and two stone chimney breasts topped with octagonal brick shafts. To the south of the Lodge is a gateway leading to the carriage drive of the Park, flanked by pedestrian gateways on either side. Each gateway is bordered by octagonal sandstone piers with pointed caps, with the piers by the carriage drive being taller. All three gateways feature iron gates. The boundary wall continues south of the pedestrian gate, maintaining the same height as the wall above the gateway, extending to the road.
